Forklift operator training and workplace transport safety

On 19 January 2026, new forklift and workplace transport training categories came into force across the UK — introducing important changes for employers, operators and safety managers.

Introduced by the Accrediting Bodies Association for Workplace Transport (ABA), the updated framework ensures operators are trained specifically for the type of equipment they use, reflecting the increasingly specialised fleets now common across industry.

For employers, this means reviewing operator training, equipment suitability and internal safety processes to remain compliant.

1 What’s Changed?

The ABA has restructured several forklift and workplace transport training categories to better reflect modern equipment types.

Updated categories now cover:

  • Counterbalance trucks
  • Reach trucks
  • Pallet stackers
  • Order pickers
  • Specialist and hybrid equipment

Some operators may now fall under a different category than before, meaning conversion or refresher training could be required.

2 What Employers Need to Do Now

To remain compliant under the new rules, employers should take action now by:

  • Checking operator certificates against the new ABA categories
  • Ensuring all training meets HSE L117 standards
  • Reviewing internal safety procedures and risk assessments
  • Confirming all equipment — including attachments — is suitable and correctly maintained

3 Why Attachments Matter Under the New Rules

The updated standards reinforce a key principle: operators must be trained on equipment that is safe, suitable and appropriate for the task — including any forklift attachments in use.

Using the wrong attachment, or using the correct attachment incorrectly, can compromise forklift stability, increase risk and undermine compliance.

4 Our Approach to Safe Attachment Use

That’s why we don’t just manufacture high-quality forklift attachments — both standard and bespoke — we also provide operator training focused on safe and effective use.
